2007 Grand Marshal

Timothy P. Murray

The Worcester County St. Patrick’s Parade Committee is over the moon with pride in announcing its Grand Marshal 2007, Lieutenant Governor Timothy P. Murray.

A member of the Worcester City Council since 1998, Tim has served the city as its mayor from January, 2002, to the present. A lifelong resident of Worcester, Lieutenant Governor Murray is married to the former Tammy Sullivan. They have one daughter Helen Roowina and a bulldog Smash. Tim’s dad taught high school, and his mom worked nights as a nurse.

Under Tim’s leadership as mayor, Worcester is experiencing unprecedented progress-an economic revival with $1billion of new development projects under construction and more in the pipeline. Specific projects that Tim has spearheaded include the expansion of commuter rail service, and the launching of aggressive reclamation of brownfields. As mayor, he chairs the School Committee and has worked to make Worcester Public Schools among the best urban school systems in the nation. Despite significant reduction in state aid, Tim has built school-community partnerships to lower drop-out rates, launch school-based health initiatives, and expand after-school programs to support working families.

Prior to his elective service, Tim attended Worcester Public Schools and went on to St. John’s High School in Shrewsbury. He then earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Fordham University. He put himself through law school attending night classes while working as a substitute teacher, and then as an advocate for homeless families. Earning his law degree from the Western New England School of Law, he became a partner in the firm of Tattan, Leonard, and Murray.

His first foray into statewide politics in 2006 proved extremely successful when Tim won the Democratic nomination for the office of Lieutenant Governor with the party’s endorsement at the convention in June, and then went on to win the primary election in September. Together Deval Patrick and Tim made history in November of 2006 when Mr. Patrick became the first elected black Governor of Massachusetts, and Tim, one of the youngest Lieutenant Governor in the history of the commonwealth.

The city of Worcester and the Worcester County St. Patrick’s Parade Committee thank Tim for all he has done as Mayor and will do as Lieutenant Governor to move Worcester forward.
